Mexico 2016

Ben and I went to Playa Mujeres with Ben's friend Ramon and his girlfriend Natalie. Ben had previously boycotted Mexico but we had such a good time in Cozumel on our cruise that when Ramon suggested a couple's trip, Ben said ok.

We stayed at Finest Playa Mujeres in a Junior Swim Up Suite.

We stayed in the Adults Only section called the Excellence Club. So we had an Adults Only pool, beach, lounge, and one restaurant. We loved this area and it was much less crowded than the family side of the resort.

I loved the swim-up suite. It was fun to have a quiet area pretty much to ourselves where we could swim, talk and get in our own hot tub. We had rooms right next to each other.

The room was really big and nice and had a rainshower and awesome soaking tub.

Wednesday 7/13:

We flew Business Class for the first time and it was awesome. We even got lunch!

We had arranged a private transfer to the resort and they were there waiting for us with 4 Coronas. Natalie and I also got a margarita at the airport Margaritaville. We got to the resort about 3:00 and were greeted with glasses of champagne.

Check in was quick and easy. We looked at our rooms then changed into our swimsuits and met out at the pools in front of our room. We swam in the pool and had drinks at the Plaza bar.

And of course, we checked out the beach!

We swam all afternoon and when it turned cooler, got into the hot tub. When we were ready for dinner, we went and changed and then we walked around and looked at all the restaurant menus and finally chose the Mexican place. I had soup and fish tacos and a delicious margarita.

Service was great but we had a long wait for each course and it was a very long meal so we crashed right after.

Thursday 7/14:

Today was our beach day. Ben and I were up early so we had breakfast by ourselves at the Bistro which is the Adults Only restaurant. We both got omelets.

We met our friends and they were just going to breakfast so Ben and I went down and got our chairs at the beach where we spent the day relaxing.

We had lunch at a restaurant called Duke’s and I got coconut red snapper and a salad, yummy.

We went back to our pools for the afternoon.

Before dinner, I convinced Ben to walk to the end of the resort so we could see if we could see the sunset. We went to this bar called Sky Bar hoping we could see it there but it was blocked by buildings. We ended up walking everywhere to no avail—the resort isn’t positioned right, oh well. I got the best pictures I could.

We met up with our friends and went to the tapas place for dinner. We ate way too much! We had planned to get dessert somewhere but decided on after dinner drinks instead. We went to the main lobby bar and I got the coconut martini that I had been eyeing.

We then went back to the Sky Bar and I got a delicious cocktail full of muddled fruit and topped with sparkling wine, delicious! We had the place to ourselves for awhile and could hear the music from the beach. After three rounds of drinks it was back to bed to get ready for our trip to Isla Mujeres the next day.

Friday 7/15:

Today we were taking the ferry over to Isla Mujeres which is an island across from Playa Mujeres. Isla is where our friends usually stay so they were excited to show us around and we let them play tour guides.

We had breakfast with our friends at the Bistro. Ben got an omelet with everything!  I got an egg white wrap with avocado and delicious fresh salsa.

After breakfast, we took a cab to the ferry and took the 30 minute ride over. The water changed gradually to the most beautiful blue I’ve ever seen.

We stopped off at a restaurant for a drink and Natalie wanted shrimp tacos so the boys left us there while they went to rent a golf cart. They walked around awhile before they found a place that would let us have a golf cart past 5:00. I got a mango margarita, yum!

Our first stop was the hotel where our friends normally stay as it had nice spots for pictures.

We stopped at this restaurant called El Comejen where they cooked a whole fresh fish for Ben and it was absolutely incredible! And I mean, they cook it right there straight from the ocean.

We saw the turtle farm where they rescue turtles and rehabilitate them.

We had plans to go ziplining but the park was closed when we got there so we just took some pictures.

But the highlight of the trip was Punta Sur, the easternmost point of Mexico.  The scenery there was just breathtaking!

We stopped for dinner at a Mexican restaurant and Ben and I left the table to see sunset—I was determined to see sunset at least once on this trip!

Our friends got "De Colores" sung to them by a mariachi band.

Back at the resort, we caught the last half of the Michael Jackson show which I had read about and it was actually pretty good!

We ended the night back at the tapas place after drinks at the lobby bar since we weren't dressed to go anywhere. We had to sit outside the restaurant we were so grubby but our wonderful waiter from the night before was happy to serve us. He just kept bringing us food until we told him to stop!

Ben and I came back to the room and took a bubble bath in our huge soaking tub and then hit the sack we were so tired!

Saturday 7/16:

Today we started the day with our complimentary aqua therapy session at the spa that came with our reservation. The guides lead you through all the paces: dry sauna, steam room, cold plunge, warm pool, etc. Some of the treatments involved ice baths and cold showers interspersed with the warm ones. It was tough at first but end the end it felt great. At the end we got neck massages while lying on warm stone beds. It was awesome and a great way to start the day!

After the spa, we all had breakfast together. Our plan was to spend the day at the pool and then have dinner at the steakhouse.

Ben got his picture taken with some parrots.

Before dinner, Ben and I walked the beach and I was able to see a little of sunset.

We all got way too much sun and Ramon couldn't make it to dinner. But Natalie was a fun dinner companion and the three of us had a nice dinner.

We were all tired after dinner and went straight to our rooms.

Sunday 7/17:

I woke up Sunday at 6:00 am. I had planned to go back to bed but then I jumped up because I remembered sunrise was at 6:15. I knew that I would be able to see it great from the beach so I grabbed my camera and went down and watched it.

We went and had our last breakfast at the Bistro and then just lazed in the room until sadly, it was time to go.

Leaving was hard but at least we had another meal in Business Class to look forward to!

We had a wonderful time in Mexico and are hoping for a return trip soon!  Adios!
