Friends Trip to Maui: Arrival and Day 1

Sometime in 2017, Ben and his friend Nick started talking about going back to Maui.  Our last trip to Maui together was in 2016 and we had a great time showing Nick around Maui.  Since we all had enough miles for a free flight, we decided to go to Maui during whale season, which is normally more expensive than the fall when we usually go.  But having the free flight made it doable for us.

After lots of discussion and watching the websites for the best flights, we finally booked our trip for January 18-27, 2018.  We decided to stay in the same condo we stayed in 2016 since we liked it so much.  Also, Nick's brother, Ben, decided to join us too and this way we would have plenty of room for the four of us and the large balcony for us all to spend time on.  So the plans were set!

Finally the day was here and we were off!

We watched movies on the long 8-hour flight.  I watched "Snatched" and "Bridesmaids" and started a John Grisham novel.

The landing was the roughest Ben and I had ever experienced.  I was getting ready to reach for my life jacket!  But the first sight of Maui makes it all worth it!

We got our bags, our rental car and hit the road only to encounter quite a bit of traffic.  Normally we fly into Maui earlier but this time we were on the road during Maui rush hour.  We passed the time listening to music and enjoying the scenery.

We got to our condo at the Royal Kahana around 4:00.  This was the same condo Ben, Nick and I stayed in 2016.  The lanai and the view are the reason we love it and we always spend alot of time out there.

We unpacked and got settled and went to Maui Brewing Company for dinner since it was close and we were all starving.  Then it was back to the condo for our first sunset and then bed since were all tired and it felt like midnight to us!

The next day we went shopping for groceries at the condo.  One place we visited was the farmer's market where we got fresh fruit, banana bread and their famous lillikoi cream cheese--some of my favorite things to eat on Maui!  I love to support the local economy also.

Our first breakfast is always at the Sea House restaurant in Napili which is close to the condo.  It's a great breakfast and you can't beat the view!

I got a yummy veggie omelet and a pog-mosa which is a mimosa made with POG juice--passionfruit-orange-guava.

After breakfast, we did our shopping and went back to the condo and stayed there the entire day out on the lanai drinking pina coladas.  We were still pooped from traveling and used this day to settle in and just chillax!

To get some steps in, we took a walk to the closest beach to see if there were any turtles out on the sand.  No turtles but at least we had a nice walk.

We grilled hot dogs at the condo and then watched a beautiful sunset.

We went to bed early so that we could be up early for our whale watch the next morning!
